The Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans of Virginia (CAPAVA) is cosponsoring an historic town hall meeting in northern Virginia on Saturday, May 15th, 2004 with the Commonwealth’s Virginia Asian Advisory Board (VAAB) to hear public testimonies from Asian Pacific American community representatives.

The public forum will be held Saturday, May 15th at the George Mason University Arlington campus at 4301 North Fairfax Drive, room 244, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lunch will be served.

The Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans, CAPAVA, is a non-partisan pan-Asian statewide organization created to help advocate the grassroots issues of Virginia’s Asian Pacific American (APA) communities.

The Virginia Asian Advisory Board is a citizens’ body created by state legislation to provide advice and guidance on the Commonwealth's policy affecting Asian Pacific American communities and on commerce between the Commonwealth and Asian nations. VAAB is comprised of 18 advisory board members and is chaired by Liu-Jen Chu of Richmond, with Robert Colorina of Chesapeake as Vice Chairman. Four members of CAPAVA’s Board of Directors serve on the VAAB.

The Vietnamese American National Gala was conceived by a group of individuals who recognized the lack of Vietnamese American representation at national events in Washington, D.C. VANG is a national effort to bring Vietnamese Americans together to join with other Asian American communities to celebrate the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, in May of each year, and to celebrate three decades of progress and achievements made by Vietnamese Americans. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) / Công Ty Bảo Hiểm Ký Thác Liên Bang recognizes the importance of financial education, particularly for people with little or no banking experience. That's why we created Money Smart, a training program to help adults outside the financial mainstream enhance their money skills and create positive banking relationships.

Financial education fosters financial stability for individuals and for entire communities. The more people know about credit and banking services, the more likely they are to increase savings, buy homes, and improve their financial health and well being. The Money Smart curriculum helps individuals build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence, and use banking services effectively. 

The Money Smart program may be used by banks and other organizations interested in sponsoring financial education workshops. Collaboration is important to the success of any education effort. The FDIC encourages banks to work with others in their communities to deliver financial education and appropriate financial services to individuals who may be unfamiliar with the benefits of having a relationship with an insured depository institution.

The Money Smart program can help banks fulfill part of their Community Reinvestment Act obligations. The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 (CRA) encourages federally insured banks and thrifts to help meet the credit needs of their entire community, including areas of low-and moderate-income. When a bank's CRA performance is reviewed, the institution's efforts to provide financial education and other retail services are a positive consideration.

The Vietnamese REACH for Health Initiative (VRHI) Coalition is a coalition of organizations in Santa Clara County. The coalition members are: National Congress of Vietnamese Americans; Vietnamese Voluntary Foundation Inc.; Immigrant Resettlement and Cultural Center; Asian American for Community Involvement; Southeast Asian Community Center; Catholic Charities; Vietnamese Physicians’ Association of Northern California; Community Health Partnership of Santa Clara County; Blue Cross of California; Santa Clara County Public Health Department; American Cancer Society; Kaiser Permanente and Santa Clara County Ambulatory Service.

Vietnamese-American women have the highest cervical cancer incidence rate of any ethnic group in the United States. The rate of cervical cancer in this population is 5 times the rate among Caucasian women. With regular Pap smear screening, the potential to dramatically reduce the incidence of invasive cervical cancer in this population.

To address this problem, the University of California, San Francisco’s Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project has begun a major initiative entitled, “REACHing Vietnamese Women: A Community Model for Promoting Cervical Cancer Screening.” This initiative is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to promote Pap smear screening among Vietnamese women in Santa Clara County. The award is part of the CDC’s new initiative “Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH 2010)” – a national project that targets six health priority areas with the goal of eliminating, by the year 2010, health disparities experienced by racial and ethnic minority populations. We are one of 25 organizations nation-wide to receive funding to implement the Community Action Plans that were developed together with inputs from community representatives to reduce health disparities among minority populations.

The VRHI Coalition was formed to specifically provide directions to this project addressing an ambitious objective of decreasing cervical cancer by increasing regular Pap smear screening among Vietnamese American women. Once of its many activities is the annual Community Forum where community members gather to provide inputs to the Community Action Plan, to provide feedback on the various interventions, to pose questions to a physicians panel, and to learn about cervical cancer-related resources and services.

This year, the Community Forum will hold 10 small focus groups to discuss our cervical cancer campaign and solicit community feedback regarding of the 5th year of Community Action Plan as well as to gather inputs for other community health concerns which will provide future directions for VHRI and its participating community-based organizations. The Community Forum is not funded by CDC. The Community Forum has been planned as an one-day event at the Franklin-McKinley School District Building in San Jose on Saturday, September 6, 2003. Each of our four previous Forums was attended by more than 250 Vietnamese women and men and childcare was provided for 50 children.

Recognizing the pivotal role that young Vietnamese American leaders will have in their communities and other areas, a group of youth, community and professional organizations have organized a major conference for young Vietnamese American leaders from pre-College students to young professionals. The Vietnamese American Youth Leadership Conference (VAYLC) will be held on June 26-28, 2003 in Washington, D.C. Past participants have come from diverse areas throughout the United States and England.

The conference will focus on leadership development, service to the community and participation in the public and policy sector. The seminars will be dynamic, interactive, and will be led by experienced and well-known professionals and scholars throughout the U.S.

VAYLC is an excellent opportunity for young Vietnamese American and Asian Pacific American leaders to meet and network with their peers from across the nation, from many student associations to young professional associations to established community organizations.

• Develop leadership skills for young Vietnamese American and Asian Pacific American (APA) young professionals and students.
• Provide a forum for young Asian Americans to discuss national and local issues and establish a network for young leaders to meet and exchange ideas.
